Ecuador: festivals and heritage
Yes,
when I hear Ecuador mentioned, the following celebration immediately comes to
mind:
Festival
of Flowers and Fruits
This
beautiful celebration takes place in Ambato, in the province of Tungurahua, It
was born as a response to the physical and psychological situation in which the
city and its inhabitants were left after the earthquake of August 5, 1949.
Outfit
:
Women
wear long dresses with bright colors and know how to wear accessories on their
heads such as hats or decorative flowers and the men wear a red poncho and a
traditional toquilla straw hat.
They
usually go dressed according to the role they played in the choreography.
They
mainly consume baked goods, fritada, mote with Mapahuira (pork fat), Pinllo
bread, natural juices and even the typical hot chocolate. In the Central Market
you can delight in all this variety of typical dishes, and of course, you
should not leave without tasting the exquisite llapingachos with chorizo.
It
has four main numbers around which the entire celebration revolves: The
Proclamation and the election of the Queen, the Blessing of the Flowers, Fruits
and Bread, the Parade of the Confraternity and the Night Watch.
It
is important as a symbol of hope, optimism, strength and unity of the
Ambateños, who moved forward after the devastating earthquake that destroyed
much of the city in 1949.
